Twitter is some kind of social network merged with rss feeds. People who have their profile in it can have followers who will received a warning any time they will spread a news.
The word twitter come from the noun twit which means a silly or foolish person. (to what I agree, I do have an account but never use it and today I requested my password and received the email in Japanese while my profile is set up as english anyway). The origin of the word is from the 1930s (earlier dialect, in the sense [talebearer] ): perhaps from the old verb twit; to tease or taunt (someone), especially in a good-humored way (as noun; a state of nervous excitement : we're in a twit about your visit.).
